If you are looking for a bunk bed that will withstand rough treatment from your kids as well as provide visual enhancement to any room you decide to put it in, the Atlantic Furniture's Columbia Twin over Twin might just be the thing for you. The 26 steel reinforcement points, mortise and tenon joinery, the innovative hook & pin rail system and two 14 piece solid hardwood slat kits pretty much guarantee a sturdy build -- combine this with the lovely, uncomplicated design, the bed's versatility and functionality (four finishes, removable top bunk, under bed drawers, trundle bed, matching furniture) top this up with a reasonable price and you get a package that is not that easy to match.

That's all nice and swell, you might think, but what do the buyers say? Read on.

The Good

Durability -- sturdiness, build quality: this is what the majority of users puts forth as Columbia's main quality. Quite often there is an element of surprise there, as if such high level of workmanship just hadn't been expected within this price range. Lack of squeaking, swaying, or movement of any kind is often reported in this regard, and that's even after the bed's been subjected to heavy abuse from energetic kids. Praise is also given to hardwood slats which are said to give really good support, while the technically savvy buyers commend the wood cutting, exact tongue and groove joints -- and construction in general.

Attractiveness -- the bed's simple elegance leaves few people indifferent. To an extent, this can be experienced by checking out the images to the left. Along with design, users very often mention the bed's finish, which is described as elegant and sophisticated, and also rich and even in tone and color.

Ease of assembly -- "easy to assemble" is one of the most often repeated phrases associated with this bunkbed. Most users managed to put it together in a few hours. The packaging is mentioned to be less bulky than expected; the bed comes in a few fairly small, easy to lift boxes which would fit into a smaller van. There are some mixed sentiments about the included directions though; while some users find them easy enough to follow, others disagree and suggest that assembling the bunk bed without them, simply by following common sense, is a faster way to success.

Drawers -- quite a large percentage of buyers advocates getting the bed with the under bed storage drawers. They are described as enormous, deep, well constructed -- providing plenty of space for blankets, extra bedding and such. The drawers are not part of the bed frame; they have rollers fit on the bottom and are just, well, rolled under the bed. This brings up a question of their functionality on floors covered with thicker carpets; opinions on that vary. The drawers have no handles, which is seen by some users as a disadvantage, but others praise this as a responsible safety measure, as handles might catch kids' clothing while they climb into bed.

The Not So Good

It is quite difficult to find a totally unsupportive comment on this bed, but dissenting opinions do exist. What complaints there are have usually to do with missing screws or tools, outdated manual, incorrect color of plugs, damaged pieces, difficult assembly and similar. Some do find fault in the product's quality though; there are mentions of weak slats, imperfect finish (scratches, blotches), squeaking, low-weight limit. Such opinions could safely be qualified as rare, however: you should be aware that not everyone is deliriously happy with what they got for their money.

Bottom Line

Atlantic Furniture Columbia Twin/Twin is one of the top selling twin over twin bunk beds out there and not without reason. By the majority of accounts given by people who have actually bought it, it is a sturdy, well-made piece of furniture. It also looks great, it's versatile -- and it's reasonably affordable. And certainly worth a serious consideration.
