Buyers on Maxtrix Bunk Beds:
difficult to assemble
The Low/Easy Rider Loft Bed with Desk and Storage by Maxtrix Kids is an excellent sleep-study-storage solution for a single child. The compact dimensions make this product perfect in situations where space is at a premium; it actually makes it possible to fit all of the essential bedroom furniture pieces in the space that is typically required for the bed alone: student desk, 3-drawer dresser and bookcase.
The student desk features a 3-drawer storage unit, a wide working surface and a glide-mounted keyboard tray. It also comes equipped with castors so it can be slid under the bed when not in use if necessary.
The dresser comes with 3 large drawers, and the bookcase offers plenty of shelf space to go around. All three pieces -- desk, dresser and bookcase -- are designed to fit under the low loft perfectly, creating a seamless and stylish look. Note that the storage units come with a set of legs that have nylon anti-scratch pads, so you can easily slide the furniture across the floor without damaging smooth surfaces. The legs are mounted on metal thread rods, and are inserted into metal inserts on the underside of the storage units for easy assembly. This also makes it easy to adjust the height.
At Maxtrix, they pay special attention to drawer construction; these are crafted using English Dovetail joints, which provides a long lasting, superior connection between the drawer fronts and sides. The smooth-running, ball bearing, self-closing drawer glides are mounted underneath the drawers -- this way you get a much higher weight-bearing capacity with less shimmer.
The loft bed itself and all the belonging pieces (including drawers) are made from solid birch hardwood, creating an extra sturdy frame that you can load up with plenty of stuff. Note that Maxtrix offers a 5 year limited warranty for factory related defects (materials and workmanship).
There are two types of ladders available for this low loft: the straight (vertical) and the angled. The straight ladder has an advantage of taking up less space, which might be significant if you are looking at this bed for its space saving facilities. The vertical ladder also doesn't get in the way when cleaning takes place and kids won't trip over it when running around. The angled ladder consumes more space, but it does offer a more comfortable and easier climb to the top bed in exchange. It also features a sturdy metal handrail -- a rather unique extra safety measure -- which is probably the reason why it costs a bit more too. Both types of ladders feature extra wide grooved steps for a safe and comfortable access to the loft bed, and can be mounted on either side of the structure. As is the case with all Maxtrix beds, this one too comes as part of Maxtrix's adaptable bed building system. How does that work? Thanks to the innovative ROCK LOCK™ leg extensions, a regular bed can be converted into a Low, Mid, High Loft or Bunk Bed. Bed conversions are easy and safe as Maxtrix's system compresses the leg extensions onto the bed legs, via a steel bolt, and includes set screws that wedge themselves into the bolt opening -- the result should be a rock solid connection.
But bed conversion is not where the customization aptitude of this system ends; rather, it merely opens up the myriad of possibilities. For example, let's say you've started your journey with a day bed for a toddler. As the child grows so do his/hers needs and wants and in a couple of years you find that lifting the bed into a low loft version -- which is done easily and inexpensively just by adding the extension legs and ladder -- makes a lot of sense; the kid can handle a low loft by now and the gained space below the bed is oh so much fun, especially if curtained off. You may even decide to increase the fun factor by adding a tent or a castle add-on, perhaps a slide and, why not, the tower veil to complete the picture. Then in a couple of more years the school starts and priorities change again. The underbed curtains go off and are replaced by a roll-in student desk and storage drawers to hold all that school stuff and additional clothes for a budding student. And maybe, just maybe, you'll want to lift the bed a little higher still, into a mid loft or even a high loft to be able to fit even more stuff underneath. Or, in case life decides to throw you a curve ball and presents you with another (unplanned) offspring, that space will come as a godsend to place another bed in. So, as you see, this system truly does grow with your -- and your children's -- needs.
