Introduction
This is a low version of the Classic Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed by Maxwood Furniture. The bottom bunk here sits just two inches off the floor, making this bed a good option for younger kids who want to sleep in a big bed. There is even a version with guard rails attached to the lower bunk which would probably serve well as a toddler bed.
The bed is made of solid pine wood and offers the same excellent 400 lbs weight capacity for the top bunk as its taller sibling. The metal rod supporting the mattress slats probably has a lot to do with it.
The top bunk guardrail height is a solid 14 inches. The manufacturer recommends a standard twin size mattress of 5 inch thickness, but not exceeding 8 inches. This probably has more to do with the lower bunk in this case, as an 8 inch mattress will still leave 6 inches of space between it and the top of the guardrail, exceeding the mandatory 5 inches. But. With an estimated 33 inches of space between the top and bottom bunk, which drops to 28 inches when you add a 5 inch mattress, things could get a little cramped on the bottom bunk, especially once the kids start growing. And the thicker the mattress the bigger the problem.
The Classic Low Twin Bunk Bed is available in seven finishes: natural, walnut, pecan, gray, white, blue and clay. Six of these are depicted below, the clay finish you can check out in several images further down.
The ladder is angled and reversible, meaning it can be fitted to either side of the bed. It comes with wide grooved steps for safe climbing and features metal hooks that make sure it is attached in place securely. This is the clay finish below, which is a little rough, going for that rustic vibe.
Classic Low Bunk Bed With Ladder On End
There is an alternate version of the Classic Low Bunk Bed with the ladder placed at the bed’s footboard. Might be a preferred solution with some room layouts. Pictured above is the version in white and the footboard view of the bed in clay finish. If you pinch-and-zoom or click for the larger picture (desktop) you will clearly see the roughness of the clay finish. The blue and the natural finishes are not available for this version.
Classic Low Bunk Bed With Stairs
The Classic Low Bunk Bed also comes in a configuration with a staircase. There is no safer way to reach the top bunk than by using stairs. They also provide some storage space, even if there are no drawers here, just some nooks that can be reached and filled from behind.
The staircase (plus handrail) add 18 inches to the length of the bed which makes it a total of 99.5 inches, so do make sure you have enough space in the room.
The Classic Low Bunk Bed with staircase is available in white, gray, clay, walnut and pecan. So, no blue and natural.
Classic Low Bunk Bed With Slide
If you take a really close look at the pictures above you’ll notice a slight difference between these two bunk beds. And no, it’s not just the finish. The slides are different. The bed in the pecan finish features a new Easy Slide, an improved version which has a lowered top platform with hand detail to center and stabilize kids before the sliding starts, and a curved bottom for softer landing. The improvement comes with a slight increase in price.
A slide of course changes the space requirements significantly, as the total width of the bunk bed with slide attached comes to about 85 inches. Plus the slide end needs to be distant enough from any walls or furniture to avoid the kids crashing into them.
The Easy Slide version is available in 5 finishes (no blue and natural), while the version with regular slide comes only in white, gray and clay.
Classic Low Bunk Bed With Tent
An under bed curtain (or tent) is available in multiple colors and designs. The basic design is available in gray, blue, pink and purple. The gray and blue curtains feature square windows, while the purple and pink come with fancy windows as seen in the images above. Apart from that there is the Farmhouse Curtain, Firetruck Curtain, Camper Van Curtain and Princess Curtain. All except the Firetruck are available in multiple colors.
What Users Say
There are hundreds of ratings on this bunk bed across different shopping sites. The lowest average rating I’ve seen is 4.7 stars at Wayfair. At Max & Lily it goes up to 4.9 stars. At the time of this writing almost 80% of ratings on Wayfair were 5 star. There was a total of 4 (four) one-star ratings. That’s less than 1 percent. I think it’s safe to say that people are liking this bed quite a lot.
The Pros
Quality of build — the bed is mostly described as sturdy, durable and well made. Does not wobble. Holds well after years of use. There are few dissenting opinions about that.
Ease of assembly — by the majority of accounts the bed is easy to put together. The instructions are described as ‘idiot proof’ and ‘super clear.’ There are a few of those who disagree, though.
The Cons
The cons are not many, but there are some. As always, there’s an occasional report about split wood, minor dents and scratches. It seems these are unavoidable, regardless of the manufacturer.
One buyer complained about the metal brackets that hold the ladder in place. Apparently the screws the brackets are fastened with can be easily pulled out by tugging on the ladder.
Another user wished for a sturdier top bed safety rails; these are apparently coming a little loose under the attack of her own four (plus everyone else’s) feisty kids.
There are several remarks about the vertical space on the lower bunk being pretty skimpy. I’ve seen it said the bed is good for up to an eight or maybe a ten-year-old but not older than that. But, you know, this comes with the territory. It’s a low-height bunk bed. Low height has its advantages and disadvantages.
Some buyers feel the instructions are not detailed enough in explaining how to set the bed up. This is a common theme with Maxwood’s products. The instructions are apparently all pictures and no words. Some find that insufficient.
Another pretty common complaint has to do with the mattress slats. These are spaced 9 inches apart, which some users feel is too wide. The slats are supported by a metal rod, so the structural integrity is not in question, but 9 inches of space might be too much for certain types of mattresses, particularly those made of foam. The manufacturer does offer their premium slat roll (comprised of 14 slats instead of 7) as a (paid) option. If that’s any consolation.
Bottom Line
This is a good looking low twin/twin bunk bed with plenty of finishes available. Comes from a reputable manufacturer. Made of praised, knot-free solid pine wood. Is in compliance with all US and EU safety regulations and the overwhelming majority of buyers (and their kids) just love it.
