Introduction
This twin over twin bunk bed merges classic looks with practicality and safety. It is crafted from plantation-grown solid wood, a piece of information the manufacturer seems to be eager to communicate, as you can find it repeated several times on the product page. I guess they are trying to emphasize the wood comes from sustainable sources, which is fair enough. Nobody wants the world’s forests to get any smaller.
What is the exact type of that solid wood is less clear. Probably pine, or at least it says so on Wayfair’s product page, although I do have a slight reserve over the veracity of that information as I found some other dubious details on that page. What are those? Well, the measurements, to be specific. Consider this image:
As you can see, it states the height of the bed to be 63.5 inches, the width 41.5 inches, and the length 101 inches. The specs on the product page, however, say this: 62” H X 42” W X 103” L. Now, a couple of inches this way or that probably won’t mean much to most people, but it might be important to some, especially the length, as those two surplus inches, in some really tight quarters, could mean the bed is impossible to fit in. In case you do have such a situation, it might be good to contact the seller for clarification.
Another thing that caught my attention is the guardrail height. It is specced at 8.5 inches, and that clearly can’t be right. If someone put a gun against my head and I had to guess, I’d estimate it at about 15 inches, but please do note this is just a guess.
The Ahmia bed comes in a trifle lower than your typical standard-height bunk bed. As a consequence, the distance between the top and bottom bunk is somewhat on the scarce side. Do have that in mind when choosing the mattress. The recommended 10 inches (for the lower bunk) might lead to some head bumping for taller kids.
The construction of this bunk bed seems to be top notch. The manufacturer likes to emphasize the hefty side rails, measuring over 1 inch in thickness and 5 inches in width. I guess that does exceed industry standards. The 13 solid wood mattress slats contribute to the bed’s robust feel, and the 250 lbs of specified weight capacity for the top bunk is pretty solid as well.
The finish of this bed deserves a closer look. It is of distressed variety, meaning the paint is deliberately rubbed or scraped off for a distressed look. In this particular case this is achieved with the wire brushing technique that brings out the inherent grain patterns and natural beauty of wood with variations in texture and color. Such a finish is also considered to wear better, since possible dings and dents won’t be as noticeable.
Two variations are available: Slate and White Mist.
The overall result is that rustic, farmhouse, coastal vibe that seems to be quite popular these days and can look fantastic in a fitting environment.
The staircase, aside from allowing for a safe ascent to the top bunk, houses three rather spacious storage bins and a smallish bookcase at the side. The stairs are reversible and can be installed on either side of the bed.
Ahmia Kids Bunk Bed With Under Bed Storage Drawers
For even more storage, a version of Ahmia bunk bed exists that adds a pair of rolling drawers 32 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 7 inches tall. There is again a mismatch between these figures (taken from the image below) and the specs on the product page which would have you believe the inner height of the drawer is 11 inches and the width 39 inches. The first is impossible, the second highly unlikely. It’s a bit of a mess, actually, but I think the measurements below are probably okay.
What Users Say
At the time of this writing there was over 200 reviews on this bunk bed at Wayfair alone, with the average rating of 4.6 stars. Almost three quarters of reviewers gave the bed 5 stars. There was only a single one-star rating.
The Pros
The bed is sturdy, of great quality, very well made — that seems to be the recurring theme among the buyers kind enough to left a comment on this bunk bed. Stairs and drawers are said to be constructed well. The packaging too gets continuous praise and that’s no small thing, as good packaging goes a long way toward minimizing complaints about dents and scratches.
Many buyers marvel at the fact they got a bed made of solid wood for the price they paid. The finish got several favorable mentions, with both colors described as beautiful. The assembly is said to be pretty straightforward, although it can take a while.
The Cons
That single one-star review I mentioned was posted by someone concerned over labels on the bed warning of formaldehyde. That’s it. That’s all it says in the post.
Other than that, there is precious little in the way of negative comments. One buyer wrote of the material that it is ‘neither the most “solid” of woods nor the worst.’ Whatever that means.
I’ve seen some four stars reviews that presumably were given purely due to the effort needed to put the beds together. One buyer of the twin over full version wrote they hired people to do the assembly job and said people quit because it was too hard for them. (??)
A couple of buyers felt that in real world the slate color is more of a taupe/beige/brown rather than gray as it appeared to them on the website. One buyer gave the bed two stars because the dimensions on the website were not correct and the bed did not fit her space. Hmmm. What did I tell you.
As always, go through the reviews yourself, that’s the best way to get a finger on the pulse of the buyers.
Bottom Line
If you like it, buy it. I don’t know what else to say. Just be aware that the finish on this bunk bed is distressed, it is not smooth and shiny. Sometimes that does not get across over the web page and then people are unpleasantly surprised when they open the box.
