Introduction
The Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed by Maxwood Furniture is just what its name implies: a simple, no-frills, modern-looking piece of kids’ furniture. Available in no less than seven different finishes, the bed should have no trouble fitting into pretty much any environment.
The metal-on-metal structural connections (pictured below in natural finish) vouch for the bed’s sturdiness and stability and go some way toward assuring it won’t get wobbly over time.
Note: the bed ships in one pretty heavy box, so it is suggested that at least two adults be there for the assembly. Some tools (two Allen wrenches) are included with shipment, but you’ll need to provide your own screwdriver and maybe a hammer, preferably a wooden or plastic one.
Materials And Safety
The Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed is made of solid New Zealand pine wood, a type of softwood often used in the manufacture of furniture due to its uniform and smooth grain, durability, resilience and sustainability.
The bunk bed has been tested to withstand 400 lbs of static weight per bed. The included ladder is reversible, which is a fancy way of saying it can be fitted to either side of the bed. There is an elongated hole in the sideboard of the ladder (again, fancily called hand hold detail), which facilitates safer climbing up and down the ladder and looks good at the same time. The ladder features wide, grooved anti-slip steps which, again, contribute to safer climbing. Okay, I’ll stop saying witch now.
As you can see above there is a metal rod running lengthwise in the middle of the bed that supports the seven mattress slats. The slats are spaced pretty wide but I guess the metal rod more than makes up for it. The specs say they (the slats) are made of plywood, although in the picture above they kinda look like solid wood to me. In any case, they are unfinished, which does not make for a very pretty sight if you reside on the bottom bunk. But that’s the case with pretty much any bunk bed. Some users have reported applying paint to the slats themselves to remedy the situation.
If the slats seem too far apart to you, the manufacturer offers the premium slat roll which features 14 slats (per bed) instead of 7.
The top bunk guardrail is 14 inches high, good enough to accommodate an 8 inch mattress and still be in compliance with the safety regulations. The manufacturer, however, recommends a 5 inch mattress for both the top and bottom bed. Just to be on the safe side. And save some of the precious vertical space on the bottom bunk.
Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed With Ladder On End
There is an alternate version of the Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed with the ladder placed at the bed’s footboard.
I have to admit I don’t really see the advantage here. I mean, it’s different with the twin/twin bunk bed where the ladder normally sticks out into the room and you save some space by placing it vertically at the end of the bed, but here that is not the case. If anything, this configuration takes up more space.
A possible argument might be that the bed is easier to make as there’s no ladder in the way. That’s not a bad point. You could also say climbing is easier, but that’s debatable. Yes, the first rung is much closer to the ground, but the angled access and the hand detail more than make up for it. IMHO, of course.
The ladder-on-end configuration is available in 4 finishes: white, clay, pecan, walnut. Configurations with either a trundle bed or two storage drawers are also available.
Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed With Trundle
There are situations when some back-up sleeping space can be golden. The trundle rolls in/out on casters. The bed is twin size.
Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed With Storage Drawers
If storage space is what you’d rather have more, fret not. Here’s the solution for you: a set of two large, 23 inch deep storage drawers with cut-out handles and roll on casters. The drawers can be placed on either side of the bed and will hold plenty of books, clothes or toys. White, clay, walnut and pecan finishes are available.
Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed With Stairs
Yes, there is even a staircase version of this bunk bed, but it is so special I decided to make a separate page for it.
What Users Say
There are well over a thousand ratings for this bunk bed at different shopping sites and the lowest average rating I’ve come across is 4.6 stars. This tells us two things: people are buying this bed and people are liking it pretty good. The large majority of reviewers gave it five stars, but there are some one-star reviews as well. Quite often those are related to the overall shopping experience more than the actual quality of the product, though.
The Pros
There are hundreds of positive comments on the quality of this bed out there. Buyers are describing it as solid and well constructed. They praise the look and the quality of the wood. ‘Strong’ and ‘sturdy’ are words that get repeated over and over. Some users are impressed with how well everything lines up. Others mention the lack of squeaking noises. Some come back after a year or two to report it still feels sturdy and is holding up well.
Many love the wide, flat steps on the ladder. No worries that the kids will slip when climbing up and down. Some like that the ladder is secured to the beds and doesn’t move, others praise the fact that it doesn’t reach the floor where it would just be in the way.
The Cons
Dissenting voices are few. Slats don’t seem very sturdy and may need some reinforcing down the line, one user reasoned, but nonetheless gave the bed four stars. Another recommends getting extra support slats for use with a memory foam mattress. Still another felt not every piece was 100% perfect visually. And here’s my favorite. Quote: some of the finish isn’t completely… umm finished? Yeah, that one brought a smile to my face.
There are a few users who feel the bed is not very sturdy. Some complain of cracked wood, dents, bolts fitting poorly. The cracks and the dents claims are often supported with images, so no doubt this can and does happen on occasion. Luckily, not very often, if we’re to trust all those positive reviews.
Ease Of Assembly
When it comes to how easy or difficult it is to put this bed together, the users seem to be of two minds about it. On one hand, there is a report by a 67-year-old woman who weighs 115 and had managed to put the bunk bed together herself, proclaiming the job super easy. The only thing she needed help with was setting the twin bunk on top.
On the other hand, another woman declared the directions that came with the bed atrocious. And she did not hold back in expressing her displeasure with the situation either. Threatened to send the bunk bed back, fuming about the looming possibility of having to pay for the service of putting it together… (Shudder) Not a pretty sight.
So there you have it. For what it’s worth, I did not infer from users’ comments that the assembly of Classic Twin Over Full Bunk Bed is especially difficult. Plenty commented that the instructions were easy to follow and that it was very easy or very very easy to put the bed together. The instructions do seem to come only as drawings, though, no writings, and this is what appears to cause difficulties for some and it elicited a few comments even from those who found the assembly job easy.
I guess in the end everyone managed to put their bunk beds together, written instructions or not. Having some words in there certainly wouldn’t hurt though.
Bottom Line
This looks like an excellent bunk bed from a reputable manufacturer that has gathered a large amount of overwhelmingly positive reviews. Good material, high weight capacity, sufficient guardrail height, seven finishes. In compliance with all safety regulations. Checks all the boxes. Not the cheapest bed you’ll find, but it won’t break the bank either. Definitely worth your consideration.
