Introduction
The Modern Farmhouse Twin Over Full Bunk Bed (branded Decimus at Wayfair) stands out among the current bunk bed offering with its distinct design: a clean-lined silhouette with rounded corners and edges creates a rustic feel about it that is complimented by the distressed neutral finish which brings out the wood grain. Flush, color-matched screws and bolts complete the appearance. This one’s a looker, all right.
Once I was past this initial enchantment, however, a thing caught my eye: there is no ladder here. How is one supposed to get on the top bed? Pop a Red Bull and grow a pair of wings?
My first thought was that they simply forgot to attach the ladder for the foto session. I went through each available foto thinking surely there’ll be a ladder in one of them, but no. Then I skimmed the description and noticed a reference to a built-in ladder. I took another look at the footboard side of the bed (pictured below) and, sure enough: there are grooved side planks attached to the boards that certainly can function as a ladder.
Possibly not a solution that a nervous mom who is wary of getting a bunk bed anyway would find comfort in; that said, you’d probably be hard pressed to find a healthy seven-year-old who’d have trouble getting on top of that bed. It is also a space saving solution, and it does sort of go with the whole farmhouse vibe.
Materials And Safety
The Modern Farmhouse Twin Over Full Bunk Bed is made of solid New Zealand pine wood, a type of softwood often used in the manufacture of furniture due to its uniform and smooth grain, durability, resilience and sustainability.
The bunk bed has been tested to withstand 400 lbs of static weight per bed. There is a metal rod running lengthwise in the middle of both beds that supports the seven mattress slats and helps in achieving that target.
The top bunk guardrail height on this bed is 13.5 inches, which means you could pair it with an 8 inch mattress and still be in compliance with the US safety standards which state that the top of the guardrail must be no less than 5 inches above the top of the mattress. The manufacturer recommends a 7 inch mattress to be used, though. Just to be on the safe side.
The bed is available in four low-VOC finishes: White Wash, Driftwood, Barnwood Brown and Farmhouse Pecan. The first two you can check if you scroll back up, the latter two are depicted below:
What Users Say
The Pros
This interesting bunk bed is rated very highly from buyers across different shopping sites. The average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars is the lowest I have seen. Users seem to genuinely like it, and this reflects in the comments. Most describe it as very sturdy, well constructed, solid, of excellent quality. They think it’s cute, chic, looking great, beautiful. The assembly did not seem to be a problem for anyone.
The Cons
I spotted only two users (out of a few dozen) who were not happy with the build quality. One reported the bed wobbles when her 7 year old climbs up. The other wrote they ordered extra support and extra hardware to make the beds more sturdy, but that they were still wobbly even after that. So… (shrug) make of this what you will.
There are few more objections about the finish, though, but it would appear those come from people who were not really aware of what sort of bed they were buying. They complain that the bed is not finished properly; that wood feels a little rough; that the color is not uniform; that you can see some of the wood grain.
These commenters seem to be missing the point, though. The manufacturer describes this bunk bed as crafted from solid wood with a distressed neutral finish that brings out the wood grain. So, the roughness and unevenness of the finish is not a defect — it’s a feature. It’s supposed to make this bunk bed look more authentic, like it just came from a farmhouse.
To get a better feel for it, scroll back up a little and check that image of the bed’s footboard again. If you’re on a desktop click on it to enlarge, otherwise just pinch and zoom. The rough surface on those boards is clearly noticeable. If that’s not your cup of tee, if you’d rather have something smooth and polished, well, keep browsing.
Bottom Line
If the rustic vibe is what you’re after you should definitely put this bunk bed on your shortlist. It has overwhelmingly positive reviews and is made by a reputable manufacturer from quality material. It complies with all safety regulations and 400 lbs weight capacity surpasses most of the competition. Just be aware of the finish thing.
