Introduction
If I were on the market for a bunk bed right now the Classic Twin Over Twin would have been a serious contender. Seriously, it’s hard to find a flaw in this piece of furniture. For starters, its clean modern lines and seven available colors make it an excellent fit for most environments.
The solid New Zealand Pine wood construction and the metal-on-metal structural connections vouch for the bed’s sturdiness.
The seven slats and the centered metal support rod are there to guarantee the specified 400 lbs weight capacity for each bed. The slats in the picture below look (to me) like they are made of solid wood, but: I have seen it stated in the Q&A at one of the manufacturer’s websites that they use slats made of plywood. So, don’t be too surprised if that’s the case when you open the box.
Furthermore, upon another look, the ladder in this picture does not feature the hand hold detail (the elongated hole at the top of the ladder, look further below), which might suggest we’re looking at an earlier version of this bunk bed here.
Those slats do look a little rough and out of place, I have to say, not the prettiest sight for those residing on the bottom bunk. I don’t know if that’s a cost-saving measure or if there’s another reason behind it, but — perhaps something to improve in the future. That said, this is the case with pretty much any bunk bed in this price range.
The included ladder can be fitted to either side of the bed. It comes with wide grooved steps for safe climbing and features metal hooks that make sure it is attached in place securely.
The top bunk guardrail is 14 inches high, so you can use an 8 inch mattress and still be comfortably within the set safety parameters.
It is worth noting that the bed ships in one box which is bound to be pretty heavy, so be advised that you’ll probably need two pairs of hands to take it inside when the shipment arrives.
As mentioned, the bed is available in 7 finishes. If you are patient enough checking out this page, you will chance upon them all.
Classic Twin Bunk Bed With Ladder On End
There is a version of this bunk bed with the ladder mounted at the footboard, for situations where this might be preferable due to spacial considerations etc. Everything else is the same, except it is available in four finishes only: pecan, clay, white and walnut.
Classic Twin Bunk Bed With Staircase
A version with stairs can be had as well, for the safest possible access to the top bunk. Plus some storage. The staircase adds 18 inches to the bed’s length, for a total of 99.5 inches. Available in white, clay, pecan and walnut.
Classic Twin Bunk Bed With Trundle
For maximizing the available sleeping space there is a version of this bunk bed with trundle bed. Note that the trundle can’t be pushed all the way under the bed, there is a lip on it to prevent that. This is a feature, not a bug.
Classic Twin Bunk Bed With Storage Drawers
Storage space is always a scarce commodity, so it would almost be a sin not to use those twelve inches of free space under the bed. Drawer dimensions are 37″ W X 24.5″ D X 10.5″ H. This configuration is available in five finishes: white, gray, blue, natural and espresso.
What Users Say
There are hundreds of ratings on this bunk bed across different shopping sites. The lowest average rating I’ve seen is 4.6 stars at Wayfair. So I’m going to go on a limb here and say that people seem to be liking it well enough.
The Pros
The bed is described as rich looking, very sturdy and well made, functional. One user attested that it definitely holds the promised weight per bunk as both her and the husband had (successfully) joined their kids in bed for story nights.
The bed is said to have plenty of headroom on the bottom bunk, or, as one user put it, the height between the beds makes it feel more open down there.
Many users commended the fact that the bunk bed can also be used as 2 separate beds until the kids/grandkids get a little older.
For the most part people found the assembly of the bed straightforward, even if it did take a while. Instructions are said to be very thorough and easy to follow.
The Cons
At least one person disagrees about the assembly being easy, though, and very passionately so, labeling the instructions terrible and calling for Maxwood Furniture to be fined for putting out such trash. (Shrug) Make of this what you will.
There are some negative reviews out there regarding the actual quality of this twin over twin bunk bed as well. One user described the bed as a bit rickety and stated they had to reinforce it in several places. Another claimed their specimen collapsed three weeks after being set up. There are also a few reports of damaged pieces and problems with screw holes.
There is one semi-negative review that caught my attention and which shows how a product can earn a bad rating when there is actually nothing wrong with it.
The issue this particular buyer had was actually with the bunk bed’s description. In it, it states the total length of the product is 81.5 inches. The buyer claims, however, that the actual length is only 80 inches, and because of that the trundle bed she had bought at the same time would not fit underneath the bunk bed.
Now, I can’t be sure about this, but from the buyer’s words it would appear she had measured the bunk bed from leg to leg. But: that’s not its total length. There are those wide ledges on footboards and headboards that stick out a little bit, maybe three quarters of an inch on each side, which would account for those one and a half missing inches.
So, a little more research beforehand (to find a trundle bed actually intended for this bunkbed), or even just scrutinizing the images more carefully, would have avoided the problem. And as a result, the product received only two stars in this case, while the user actually liked it very much and described it as a very sturdy bunk bed set.
Bottom Line
We have here a very nice looking twin/twin bunk bed with plenty of finishes available. Comes from a reputable manufacturer. Made of praised, knot-free solid pine wood. Is in compliance with all US and EU safety regulations and the large majority of buyers (and their kids) just love it.
